Granite is a worry-free surface that is easy to maintain. Most spills can be cleaned with a soft cloth and warm water. Ammonia-Free Windex is a good film cutter and is recommended for routine maintenance. Never use powdered cleansers or abrasive pads to clean your stone. Even "soft scrub" type cleaners contain pumice, which is powdered volcanic stone, and might damage your granite. An annual application of silicone impregnator is also recommended.
All natural stone products are subject to damage if not cared for properly. Normal housekeeping should include cleaning of stone after each meal or counter top use. If a person cleans up after each meal there is very little possibility of ever staining a granite counter top. Clear hot water should be used to remove surface scum, food and/or any other deposit left on the surface. The use of an ammonia free glass cleaner with a soft paper or cotton cloth can be used to remove any fine residue of film left behind by the water. No other soaps, detergents, or cleaners should be used on the stone. Never stand on the tops, especially at the thin strips in front of the cook top and sink.
Fats are our enemy! Of particular hazard to stone are oils, fats, grease, or products containing these. Extra care should be taken to make as little contact as possible with the stone with these products and never for a prolonged period of time. To cook bacon and have it spatter is not a problem if cleaned up immediately after cooking.
Water and other liquids will mark marble & granite if left for long periods of time. (i.e., moisture from sweating glasses, flower pots, etc. will leave rings or other marks).
If by chance a stain does settle into the stone, do not attempt to remove it with cleaners, abrasives, or any other method! Call Northern Granite, Inc. at (231) 369-4325, and we will mix a poultice and give directions for its use to out customers at no charge. Most stains can be removed in this way.
Stone should be given the same care as the fine wood finishes. Even though most granite have a compressive strength of 20,000 p.s.i. and marbles 5,000 p.s.i. They are not intended to be used as a chopping block. A cutting board should be used for all slicing and dicing.
Sealer, if purchased, to best of our knowledge, only helps prevent moisture from migrating into the stone. Many manufacturers advertise that sealers will eliminate staining. We have not witnessed this in our experience. Do not apply additional sealers unless they are migratory (and made especially for marble & granite), which means they are a penetrating sealer that is invisible and does not leave a film on the surface.
We strongly advise that no plumber’s putty is used in the installation of plumbing appliances. It contains Petroleum Distillates and has been known to stain granite.
We provide a one-(1) year warranty from the date of completion, on manufacturer’s material and workmanship.
